For 50 years, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization has been securing peace, protecting the independence of its member states, and promoting human rights. The "North Atlantic Treaty" signed on April 4, 1949, created an alliance with shared values and interests for the participating independent states. Germany joined the Community in 1955. The Alliance has always been more than a military alliance. NATO increasingly became the forum for a common policy of the member states and led to disarmament negotiations. In order to achieve NATO's objectives, the Parties undertake to settle disputes by peaceful means, to assist each other and to promote international cooperation. The core of the contract is the provision that in case of threat to the integrity of the territory, the political independence or the security of a member country, the partners consult or even take military action to counter such a threat. Since the change in Eastern Europe, the integration of the Central and Eastern European states into the Euro-Atlantic structures marks the building blocks on NATO's way into the 21st century.
