On March 29, 1955, the first German Chancellor, Konrad Adenauer, and the Danish Prime Minister Hans Christian Hansen made the "Bonn-Copenhagen Declarations" on the Petersberg near Bonn. These statements vouch for essential rights of the two national minorities: the approximately 20,000 Germans in the Danish Nordschleswig and the approximately 50,000 Danes in the northern Schleswig-Holstein. For example, the minorities may run their own kindergartens and schools and use the spoken and written language they desire. The explanations were the cornerstone of German-Danish reconciliation after the conflicts of the Second World War and are still considered today as a model for the treatment of minority issues in Europe.
