As early as 1946, one year after the end of the Second World War, the first Bregenz Festival Week took place. At that time it was still a pretty improvised cultural event. On two gravel barges - one for the stages of Mozart's ugendwerk "Bastien et Bastienne", the second for the orchestra - the path of one of the most successful and now internationally recognized festival events in Austria began. Already at that time, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra formed the Festival Orchestra and still play a major role in the development and success of the festival. In 1995, the Bregenz Festival will be held for the 50th time. With Beethoven's "Fidelio" on the Seebühne and Rimsky Korsakow's "The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitesch", the tradition of the Bregenz dramaturgy continues. A popular work on the floating stage is opposed by an unknown one in the new Festspielhaus. The motif of the special postage stamp published on this occasion shows a scene representation from the "flying Dutchman".
