The basis of the Bausparkassenbewegung around the world formed the housing shortage. In England, the cradle of the "Building Societies", the building savings system unfolded in the late 18th century. Starting from England, the first building society was founded in the United States of America in 1831. In Europe, it was first dealt with in Germany with the Bauspar idea, from 1924 there was the establishment of numerous building societies there. In 1925, building society savings took hold in Austria. After stormy beginnings it came after the legal regulation in the years 1932 and 1933 to a consolidation and particularly after the Second World War to an enormous upward trend of building savings in Austria. In 1975 there were four building societies in Austria: Wüstenrot, Bausparkasse of the Volksbanks, Bausparkasse of the Austrian savings banks and the Raiffeisen Bausparkasse. The Austrian building societies are specialized institutes with the task of financing new and maintaining or improving existing housing.
