After the unconditional surrender of Germany in May 1945, the misery in Germany and other European countries was great. In an effort to help, a private aid organization, the Cooperative for American Remittances to Europe (CARE), was founded in Washington on November 27, 1945. Millions of American citizens donated $ 10, for which there was a CARE package filled with key staple foods. This relief action took 14 years for Germany. For many families in devastated Germany receiving one of nearly 10 million CARE parcels meant help to survival. From 1946 to 1960, the German population received food, clothing, medicines and tools worth 362 million marks. The post-war CARE has become a global organization. On the occasion of CARE's fiftieth anniversary, we in Germany are once again reminded of American food and reconstruction aid, for which we are still grateful today. That is why CARE GERMANY, in addition to many other projects in the Third World, today provides exactly the same help in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia. (Text: CARE GERMANY, Bonn)
