Due to the separation of Vienna and Lower Austria with effect from 1 January 1922, the largest federal state of the Republic of Austria lost its capital and center. In the referendum carried out in 1986, the population spoke in favor of St. Pölten as the state capital. In recent years, there has been an economic boom and a comprehensive image renewal. And rightly so, St. Pölten has an important historical past. The settlement existed 5,000 years ago. The Romans also settled here in the branch called Aelium Cetium. The city today received its name from the 8th-century Hippolyt monastery, today's cathedral.
