Otto von Guericke, born 1602 in Magdeburg, was from 1646 to 1681 mayor of his native city. In addition, Guericke dealt with scientific research. In 1649 he invented the air pump, later a manometer, a pressure gauge for gas and liquid. Above all, his proof of the atmospheric air pressure with the so-called Magdeburg hemispheres pumped from 1654 is known. Guericke also showed that sound does not propagate through the airless space and noticed the repulsive forces between electric charges of the same name. His detailed account of the many experiments appeared under the title "Experimenta nova (ut vocantur) Magdeburgica de vacuo spatio". Otto von Guericke died on May 11, 1686 in Hamburg.
