The University of Graz was founded in 1585 through the cooperation of the rulers, pope and emperor. Archduke Karl II of Inner Austria transferred its organization and care to the Jesuits. They led until the abolition of their order in Austria in 1773, the university. Thus, until the takeover of the school system under state control by Maria Theresia and her son Joseph II, the old Charles University was one of the objectives of the "Societas Jesu" serving institution. The takeover and from 1773 the complete leadership by the absolutist state of the Austrian Enlightenment has brought the University of Graz little pleasing. In 1782 she became a lyceum, that is, a university with a faculty limited to the absolute minimum. Corresponding to the overall development of the Austrian higher education system, the development of the modern university began again in the first half of the 19th century. In 1827, the Lyceum in Graz was transformed by Emperor Franz I into a university, which now called itself "Carolo-Franciscea Greacensis". Since then, the University of Graz has set decisive impulses for trend-setting developments in all scientific areas.
