The Declaration of the World Powers, beginning with the Crimean Conference and the Moscow Conference of 1943, declared the solemn revival of a free and independent Austria after the end of the war one of its war aims. After the liberation of Vienna by the Soviet Army, the executive committees of the three democratic parties (Socialist Party of Austria, Austrian People's Party, Communist Party of Austria) jointly issued a declaration of independence on April 27, 1945. Among other things, it stated that the democratic Republic of Austria had to be restored and established in the spirit of the 1920 Constitution. The Anschluss imposed on the Austrian people in 1938 was declared null and void. On the day of proclamation of the Declaration of Independence, all military, official or personal pledges made by the Austrians to the German Reich and its leadership became null and void. All Austrians were then again in civic duty and loyalty to the Republic of Austria. The special postage stamp issued for the 40th anniversary of this declaration shows a symbolic representation of this topic.
