As one had already recognized the importance of a university early on, a grammar school was built in Salzburg in 1617 with the help of the Benedictine monasteries in southern Germany. Five years later, on the 8th of October, the university was solemnly opened by the suggestion of Paris Count Lodron. The university probably owns the most beautiful university church in the world: the Kollegienkirche pictured on the stamp. This church was built under Archbishop Johann Ernst Graf Thun according to the plans of Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. The Paris Lodron University was very popular right from the beginning. Numerous students from home and abroad visited the university, where not only Greek and history, but also the theater was given special attention. This theater and music care has certainly contributed to the development of Salzburg to the festival city. From the second half of the 18th century, however, the university's heyday was over: on the one hand, Austria and Bavaria's students were forbidden to study abroad; on the other hand, it was the religious misanthropy of the time that turned against the Benedictine-run university. So it took until 1962 (!), Until one began to teach again successfully at the university.
