At the beginning of the sixteenth century, the Portuguese, John of Ciudad, founded his first hospital in Granada, where he cared for the sick of all social classes in a manner very advanced at that time. Men of all classes joined him, and in 1690, when John was canonized, there were already 200 hospitals of the Brother Brothers in all parts of the world. They came to Austria at the express wish of the Prince of Liechtenstein, who had enjoyed their care in Italy. In 1614, the Brothers of Mercy, under the direction of Father Gabriel Ferrara, one of the most renowned surgeons of his time, opened the hospital in Vienna-Leopoldstadt with 20 beds for the time being. A year later a house of the Brothers of Charity was built in Graz and in the following years another 20 in the German, Italian and Slavic languages. The brothers helped with catastrophes and epidemics and had to set up and run hospitals in all wars. After the First World War Vienna had to be restarted, as all facilities had been destroyed. During the Second World War, the hospital with its 340 beds under the direction of the Brothers of Mercy served as a field hospital and thus was spared the plundering. In the service of the poor and the sick, the brothers of the hospital order fulfill the vow today to provide the sick with the most modern methods. The brand image shows a hospital bed with a patient being cared for by a Brother in Charge.
