Johann Christian Senckenberg was born in 1707 in Frankfurt am Main. After studying medicine in Halle and Göttingen, he practiced as a doctor from 1737 in his native city of Frankfurt and was committed to health care reforms. In 1763 he donated his entire fortune to improve the medical system of the imperial city. He bought a three-hectare plot of land on which a "Hort der Gelehrtheit" was founded. This essentially included a specialized library, a laboratory, a botanical garden, a natural history collection and an anatomy. The opening, however, the doctor did not live. During a visit to a shell of the foundation building in Frankfurt Senckenberg crashed on 15 November 1772 from a scaffolding to its death.
