Georg Matthäus Vischer is one of the most important cartographers and topographers Austria has ever produced. He was born on April 22, 1628 in Wenns, Tyrol. Despite his spiritual profession, geography and surveying were his real vocation. He soon painted maps, fortified towns and castles in various stately services. Vischer set new standards in his area of expertise. He used the most modern surveying equipment in his day and also toured the whole country. His expertise in demarcation and border disputes received undivided recognition and his expertise was highly valued. Despite these successes, he came in his last period of life but more often in financial difficulties and so he had to sell his books and instruments in his year of death. Vischer died completely impoverished on December 13, 1696 in Linz. His tomb is unknown. Today, one commemorates his great achievements with a showroom in the castle ruin of Kollmitz near Raabs an der Thaya, Lower Austria.
