On June 26, 1945, the United Nations was founded by 51 nations in San Francisco. The United Nations Day celebrates the return of the entry into force of the United Nations Charter on October 24, 1945. Today, the UN counts 160 member states. After the signing of the State Treaty, the newly-created Austria joined the United Nations on December 14, 1955. Vienna has been the third headquarters of the UN since 1979. Since 1960, Austria has participated in ten UN peacekeeping operations, deploying 28,000 men. Of these, 26 members of the Austrian UN troops were killed in action for peace.
