Franz Joseph Müller was born on 4 October 1742 in Poysdorf in Lower Austria. He studied philosophy in Vienna, but was also in other subjects such. in mining knowledge. After completing his studies, he entered the service of the Hofkammer (financial administration) at Berg- und Münzwesen. His career began in Schemnitz in the then Upper Hungary. In 1775 he came to Oberbergbaumeister to Schwaz in Tyrol and took over a few years later, the management of the Erzbergbauverwaltung in Sibiu. He is regarded as the discoverer of tellurium, which he identified as a result of chemical studies in 1782 as an unknown element. This element is mainly used today in metallurgy and is used as an additive in copper and especially iron alloys (steel) to improve their properties.
