On March 16, 1957, a group of courageous men founded the Austrian Water Rescue in Linz, as a trade association of Austrian lifeguards. Thus, the sport could be put into the service of life-saving. Relatively quickly established in the federal states, especially in Carinthia, Upper Austria and Vorarlberg and Salzburg, the first "area management", which began life-saving operations in 1957. In 1958, the first water rescue schools in Hermagor-Presseggersee and Salzburg-Paracelsusbad were put into operation where "teacher's licensees" (instructors) were trained and tested. Tasks of the ÖWR are the dissemination of appropriate knowledge and skills in swimming, in the rescue of drowning and first aid measures. In 1970, the "Arbeitsgemeinschaft für die Wasserrettungswesen" was founded with the purpose of better coordination of all water rescue organizations in Austria. In the seventies the ÖWR strongly expanded its network of employment agencies in Austria. By 1982, 5,110 lives could be saved with the help of the ÖWR. The brand image shows a lifeguard in action.
