Already at the beginning of the century, the idea arose to bring heavy industry from the narrow Alpine valleys to the major arteries of rail, ship and road. This idea was also taken up in 1938, but the production facilities built during the war were severely damaged by this war. The actual construction period did not begin until 1946, when the company was nationalized, and it was not until 1950, when all the plants had been repaired and rebuilt. A next big step in the development of the company was the adoption of the Austrian Iron and Steel Plan, which defined the Austrian sheet metal production at VÖEST in Linz. Since then, the factory has been constantly modernized and expanded. The construction of an "LD" steel plant III was already planned for the near future.
