The special stamp series "German Painting of the 20th Century" honors the painter Ernst-Ludwig Kirchner in 2002. He was born on May 6, 1880 in Aschaffenburg and studied architecture in Dresden from 1901 to 1905. Kirchner is considered one of the artistically dominating personalities of the expressionist artist group »Brücke« founded in Dresden in 1905. His strong-colored, area and contour-inspired style was inspired by Edvard Munch, Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin. Kirchner's work includes oil paintings, drawings, etchings, woodcuts and wood sculptures. His most famous motifs are, in addition to numerous nudes, especially the so-called Berlin Street Pictures, which were created just before the First World War. Shaken by the National Socialist iconoclasm, which did not spare his works, Ernst-Ludwig Kirchner committed suicide on 15 June 1938.
