This stamp shows a relief of the sculptor and porcelain modeler Johann Peter Melchior, in which Goethe is depicted in profile. Melchior was born on October 12, 1742 in Lintorf (in the Rhineland). He was from 1767 to 1779 model master at Höchster porcelain. During this time, the relief of Goethe was also created. After the manufactory had been dissolved, Melchior continued to work at the Frankenthal factory until 1797, shortly before his 1800's. He then continued to work for Nymphenburg porcelain until 1822. Melchior died on June 13, 1825.
