Johann August Röbling was born in 1806 in the Thuringian Mühlhausen. Already during his studies at the Bauakademie in Berlin (1824/25), he dealt with the then still new suspension bridge technology. After the exam, the young engineer constructed suspension bridges over the Ruhr and the Lenne, which, however, did not succeed in competing with those in charge against conventional construction methods. Röbling emigrated to the United States in 1831 and developed a new kind of wire rope in 1841, which enabled considerably larger suspended structures - including his most ambitious project: the Brooklyn Bridge over the East River in New York. Röbling died there in 1869 in the initial phase of their construction. At its inauguration in 1883, it was with its span of 486 meters, the largest suspension bridge in the world.
