Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch, born on August 29, 1808, was the founder of the German cooperative system. In his Saxon hometown of Delitzsch, he got to know the problems of craft businesses early on which could not keep up with the emerging industry. As a liberal-minded politician, he relied instead on state support on "help for self-help": in 1849 he called the Shoemaker Cooperative in Delitzsch to life and thus founded the cooperative as a separate economic form. He also promoted the creation of credit unions (today's Volksbanken) to raise money for investment. Hermann Schulze-Delitzsch died in 1883 in Potsdam. Today, 20 million members are organized in cooperatives in Germany.
