Hans Christian Andersen was born on April 2, 1805 in Odense, Denmark. At the age of 14, he wanted to stand on his own two feet and went to Copenhagen to work at the Royal Theater. There King Friedrich VI. attentive to the young Andersen and enabled him from 1822 a five-year school education. Then Andersen decided for a poetry career. From 1829 his first poems and books were published. From 1835 he made his name with the first three novels in Denmark and especially in Germany. In the same year he wrote the first of his approximately 170 fairy tales (including "The Ugly Duckling" and "The Little Mermaid"). With them he became world famous. Hans Christian Andersen died on 4 August 1875 in Copenhagen.
