The doctor and philanthropist Friedrich Joseph Haass was born on August 10, 1780 in Münstereifel. After studying medicine in Jena and Vienna, he ran a private practice in 1806 as an ophthalmologist in Moscow, where in 1807 he became chief physician of the Paul Hospital and finally personal physician to Tsar Alexander I. In 1827, he was appointed to the prison committee for Moscow publicly appointed by the tsar. Hats completely on the new task to help the poorest of the poor, who had to march as prisoners in chains on foot to Siberia. Already in 1832 Haass a complete liberation from any chains for the weak and cripples. The high iron shackles that were forged around the healthy prisoners' ankles were also made possible by Dr. Haass be scaled down. Dr. Haass also took special care of the families of the deportees. The great riches that Dr. Haass had acquired as a doctor in his private practice, he sacrificed completely for the poor and prisoners. He died impoverished on August 16, 1853. When he was buried, thousands followed his coffin. His grave in Moscow is still cared for by unknown people and decorated with flowers. Also in his hometown, today's Kneipp spa Bad Münstereifel, Dr. med. Haass never forgotten. A memorial plaque adorns his birthplace.
