Carl Spitzweg is one of the most popular German painters. Born on 5 February 1808 in Unterpfaffenhofen, Spitzweg lived in the so-called Biedermeier period. In many pictures he portrays his contemporaries in their petty-bourgeois milieu. Spitzweg developed the ironic punch-picture in which he portrayed eccentric eccentrics from his time. Probably the most famous example is his painting The Poor Poet, which is reproduced on the stamp reissue. It was the first image with which Spitzweg ventured to take publicity in 1839. As a trained pharmacist, he had never attended an art academy and taught himself to be self-taught. Spitzweg created more than 1,500 pictures and drawings until his death in Munich in 1885.
