Born in Berlin on October 23, 1801, Albert Lortzing is especially known to music lovers as the composer of the opera »Zar und Zimmermann«, which premiered in 1937 in Leipzig. With this work, the former singer, actor, poet and bandmaster established his breakthrough as an opera composer. Inspired by the unprecedented success among others at the theaters in Cologne, Detmold, Leipzig, Berlin and Vienna, Lortzing composed an opera almost every year from now on - and became one of the most important representatives of German romantic opera. Popular favorites were and still are the operas »Der Wildschütz«, »Undine« and »The Weaponsmith«. On January 21, 1851 Lortzing died completely impoverished in Berlin.
