The motif shows Goethe on a drawing by Johann Heinrich Lips. The painter and engraver was born on April 29, 1758 in Kloten near Zurich. With the help of Goethe, he became a professor at the drawing academy in Weimar. He was also known for his portraits of Goethe and Wieland engraved in copper, as well as his collaboration in Lavater's "Physiognomische Fragmente". Lips died on May 5, 1817 in Zurich.
