The Varus Battle - also known as »Battle in the Teutoburg Forest« - is one of the main events in European history. Emperor Augustus commissioned governor Varus to make all Germania into a Roman province. However, in 9 AD, Varus, with his three legions (about 12,000-18,000 soldiers), fell into a Germanic ambush. Led by the Cheruscan ruler Arminius, the Teutons defeated the Romans. Rome then gave up all the bases east of the Rhine. The defeat was so shocking that the defeated legions 17, 18 and 19 were not re-erected - a one-time event in Roman military history. The exact location of the battle is unknown. It is likely today that Varus and his legions perished at Kalkriese in the Osnabrück region.
