In an imperial patent of August 1771, the establishment of a stock exchange was ordered on 1 September 1771. As a result, the Vienna Stock Exchange, with its ups and downs, became a mirror of the country's overall economic situation. The Napoleonic Wars and the Revolutionary Year of 1848 gave the stock market its first two crises. The beginning wave of industrialization led members of all classes of society to invest their savings in equities, culminating speculation. These activities were stopped abruptly in 1873 at the time of the World's Fair in Vienna, when the prices plunged rapidly to the ground and resulted in a complete destruction of the securities market. Both World Wars initially brought the closure of the Vienna Stock Exchange. After the Second World War, the Vienna Stock Exchange was officially opened on 15 November 1948, since then it has been the central trading office and the only stock exchange in Austria.
