The opening of the Hungarian-Austrian border was a decisive impetus for the revolutionary events in the GDR in the autumn of 1989. This border was part of the »Iron Curtain«, the system boundary that had divided Europe since the Second World War. On May 2, 1989, when Hungary began to dismantle the border installations, many GDR citizens hoped to reach the Federal Republic of Germany via Hungary and Austria and fled to the German Embassy in Budapest. This had to be closed soon because of overcrowding. On September 11, 1989, Hungary opened the border and within three weeks, 30,000 East German citizens reached Austria via the Federal Republic of Germany.
