With the end of the Second World War, the victorious powers divided Germany into four occupation zones, from which two German states developed. Only the peaceful revolution in the GDR in the years 1989/90 created the condition and encouraged Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl to consistently strive for a re-establishment of German unity. While the "2 + 4 negotiations" ensured foreign policy reunification, the domestic political path led through a monetary, economic and social union, which was sealed on 31 August 1990 with the unification treaty. With its accession to the scope of the Basic Law, the GDR ceased to exist on 3 October 1990. Many Germans celebrated the reunification with a big party in front of the Berlin Reichstag building.
