On February 3, 1757, Paul Kitaibel was born in Mattersburg. He attended grammar school in Ödenburg, the Lyceum in Raab (Györ) and goes to the University of Ofen in 1780 to finally study medicine after unsuccessful attempts in the subjects of law and theology. Above all, botany, an essential area of ​​medical education at that time, fascinated the young man. Professor Johann Jakob Winterl, the board member for the subjects of chemistry and botany, becomes his sponsor and already makes him his assistant as a student. After the death of the professor in 1809 Kitaibel takes over his chair. On a total of 16 trips in the period 1795-1815 through Hungary, he explores the plant world. In his investigations, the researcher worked interdisciplinarily, which earned him in Hungary the name of a "homo universalis of science". After suffering, he died on December 13th
