The priest and social politician Lorenz Werthmann was the founder and first president of the German Caritas Association, the largest Catholic aid organization in Germany. Werthmann was born on October 1, 1858 in Geisenheim in the Rheingau and died on April 10, 1921 in Freiburg. In his church work, he demonstrated great social commitment and sat down, for example. for the welfare of the workers. Werthmann's political work made it possible to finance social services in a solid manner, and thus to establish nationwide charitable social work in Germany. Today more than half a million people work in Caritas' approximately 25,000 institutions, such as nursing homes, kindergartens and clothing stores.
