The Swedish writer Selma Ottilia Lovisa Lagerlöf was the first woman to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1909. In 1914 she joined - also the first woman - the Swedish Academy of Sciences. Selma Lagerlöf was born on 20 November 1858 on the small estate Måckaba in western Sweden. Her debut novel »Gösta Berling« (1891) was successful, and with the two-volume novel »Jerusalem« (1901/1902) she became world famous. The greatest popularity was achieved with her scholar's book "The Wonderful Journey of Little Nils Holgersson with the Wild Geese" (1906/1907). In addition to her literary work Selma Lagerlöf was committed to the rights of women and the support of the needy.
