Paul Ehrlich (1854-1915) explored the tissue structure of living things. He succeeded in coloring and marking individual cell types. From this he developed the idea to combat only selected cell types, for example pathogens, with drugs. He became the founder of chemotherapy. Ehrlich received the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1908. Emil von Behring (1854-1917) established serum therapy, in which a patient is given an antidote to the immunization against a disease, the so-called antibodies. Von Behring developed in 1890 together with Erich Wernicke vaccines against diphtheria and with the Japanese Shibasaburo Kitasato against tetanus. In 1901 he was raised to the peerage and received in the same year the then awarded for the first time Nobel Prize for Medicine.
