The work of the German-Jewish poet Else Lasker-Schüler (1869-1945) is undoubtedly one of the timeless classics. Her emotional works deal with the themes of love, family and religion, creating mystical dream worlds in which she unites Christian, Old Testament and Oriental elements. She stylizes herself as the ruler of invented legends in which ideal ideas are in conflict with real political and personal circumstances. As Germany's most important expressionist poet and outstanding exponent of avant-garde literature, she is at the center of Berlin's bohemia at the beginning of the 20th century. She rejects the traditional female role, at the same time she campaigns for free love and becomes a symbolic figure for the liberation from conservative constraints. Not least because of her appearance - black pageboy cut, wide trousers, colorful robes and eye-catching jewelry - she is considered an eccentric bird of paradise, who disguised as an alter ego "Prince Yussef of Thebes".
