The founder of Otolaryngology, Adam Politzer, was born on September 1, 1835, in Albertirsa, a small town south of Budapest. His grandfather was a respected surgeon, Count Palffy's personal physician, his father's teacher. Politzer studied medicine in Vienna. He finished his studies in 1859 and was able to determine in 1860 in the Josephin Academy, the second medical school in Vienna, in the laboratory of the physiologist Carl Ludwig animal experiments on the innervation of the internal muscles of the ear. In 1861 he was awarded the lecturer of otology. In 1863 Politzer was appointed the poor ear doctor of the city of Vienna for the supply houses. Together with J. Gruber, also a pioneer in the field of otology, Politzer took over 1873 the direction of the newly founded Vienna Univ. Ear Clinic, the first such facility in the world. He decisively expanded the clinic and diagnostics of ear diseases and published countless pioneering scientific papers. On August 10, 1920 Politzer died, engaged in scientific work until the last days.
