The German Post of the GDR honors this anniversary with three special values, which also reflect three chapters of stamp history. 35 +15 Pfennig - Sachsen-Dreier 1850 The first German stamp appeared in Bavaria in 1849. It followed on 1 July 1850 as Saxon counterpart to 3 Pfennig the collectors nearly proverbial "Saxonia threesome". Within eight years of the banknote printing plant Hirschfeld in Leipzig, there were eight editions with a total of 500,000 copies. Of these, however, according to fairly consistent estimates, no more than four to five thousand copies have survived today. The reason: The 3-pfennig mark was intended for printed matter postage on Kreuzbandsendungen, was torn with the packaging mostly and wandered into the wastebasket. At the very end of its sales and validity period, the three-Saxony could also be used as a real "stamp", ie on letters. It is today considered one of the most sought-after rarities of the old German stamp period.
