At the German Gymnastics Festival in 1958, the German Federal Post Office issues a special postage stamp, which should at the same time acknowledge that gymnastics has been maintained in Germany for 150 years. The artists invited to prepare drafts were recommended to use the turner's cross from the time of the gymnast Jahn in conjunction with an oak leaf or oak thread. Oak leaves have always honored the gymnasts who emerged victorious from the competitions. The graphic artist Ernst Göhlert has submitted a draft. Two designs by Eduard J. Sauer, Hermann Zapf, Max Bittrof and Erich Meerwald have each been submitted by Herbert Stelzer and Alfred Finsterer. The Art Advisory Council has emphasized the suggestion of Eduard J. Sauer, for whom he recommended to omit the small oak leaf, and Ernst Göhlert's, because of their taut form and thematic simplicity, as the superior solutions. The Federal Minister of Posts and Telecommunications preferred the design by Ernst Göhlert and decided to carry it out. The brand was designed by Bundesdruckerei Berlin in multicolor offset printing in a harmonious combination of green, gray and black.
