Founded in Munich on May 9, 1869, the German Alpine Association, today the largest mountain sports association in the world, offers more than one million members not only a platform for exchange, but also an extensive road network of 30,000 kilometers in length, accommodation, detailed maps, clothing, safety equipment and much more. The voluntary section of 356 sections maintains more than 320 publicly accessible mountain huts and shelters. Trained instructors ensure a sound education, which is based on an intensively operated, internationally recognized security research. The tourist development of the Alps is meanwhile considered to be over. Due to the merits of the association for the preservation of nature and landscapes 2005 was recognized as a nature conservation association at the federal level. As a professional association for alpinism in the German Olympic Sports Federation, the DAV also looks after expedition and ski mountaineering as well as sports and competition climbing. Sport climbing will be an Olympic discipline for the first time in 2020.
