The Danube is regularly used since the younger Stone Age. In certain periods of history, for example in the Roman era and the High Middle Ages, the trade in the Danube achieved the greatest economic significance. The beginning of industrialization at the end of the 18th century also brought about a modernization of Danube navigation. As early as 1818, the first steamboat, the "Carolina", sailed on the Danube. In 1823 a First Danube Steamship Company was established, which had to stop its operation after the construction of two steamships but already around 1826. Only a few years later, a new "First Danube Steamship Company" was founded by the two Englishmen J. Andrews and J. Pritchard. They worked closely with the world's leading steam engine manufacturer, Boulton, Watt & Co, Birmingham. After the constituent general meeting on 13 March 1829 and the procurement of the necessary capital, the construction of the first ship began. The first value of this series shows the steamer "Franz I.", the first ship of the newly founded First Danube Steamship Company. The launch of this ship took place on July 26, 1830.
