For the construction of the Viennese city temple the architect Josef Kornhäusel was selected from several suggestions. He was born on November 13, 1782 in Vienna. From 1812 to 1818 he was building director of the Prince of Liechtenstein. After completion of this activity, he built, among other things, from 1820 to 1823, the Weihburg near Baden and 1822 Josefstädter Theater. In 1823 he began building the new prayer house for the Jewish community in Vienna. In 1825, the foundation stone of the apartment building was laid, behind which the synagogue had to be hidden, since one was not allowed to notice that there was a non-catholic church there. Kornhäusel made four designs for the temple, the third of which was executed. The Vienna City Temple, which was inaugurated in 1826, was the center of intellectual life for Viennese Judaism. From 1848 to 1938 the Jews lived in relative freedom and participated actively in the cultural life of Austria. The brutal end of this period meant the Kristallnacht (9/10 November 1938). All synagogues and prayer houses in Austria were destroyed. Only the Viennese city temple remained, since its demolition would have affected the entire environment. In 1963, the temple was renovated and re-opened. The brand image shows an interior view of the city temple.
