The steam power plant St. Andrä is located in the Lavant Valley in eastern Carinthia. Energy production from hydropower plants requires the addition of calorific power plants to supplement water-short periods of time (winter, dry periods). For the construction of the St. Andrä steam power plant, the Lavanttaler lignite mining district provided particularly favorable conditions. The then possibility for a generous reduction of these previously inadequately developed lignite deposits and the favorable location were the reasons for the establishment of a thermal power plant at this point. After a completion in the years 1950 to 1952 (St.Andrä I) with four sets of machines totaling 67,500 kilowatts was begun in 1957 with the expansion of St. Andrä II. The smaller plant St. Andrä I worked in 1962 with a steam pressure of 42 atmospheres and a steam temperature of 460 degrees, whereby for the production of one kilowatt hour 3350 calories are necessary. The brand image shows the powerhouse with two cooling towers, behind which are the coal storage areas with a capacity of up to 300,000 tons of coal.
