The power plants built on the Upper Austrian Enns until 1962 were all river power stations. Therefore, it was forced to adapt their power generation to the natural supply of water, which is subject to considerable variations depending on the season. However, by damming the inflow during the night hours, part of the available hydropower can be collected for processing during the high demand day hours. This type of power generation is referred to as a threshold operation. The construction of the large power plant Großraming of Ennskraftwerke AG started in 1942. Due to the war, however, construction activity had to cease in 1944 and could only be resumed in 1946. The construction project was completed in 1951. The powerhouse consists of two machine halls, one on each bank of the Enns, with the weir fields in between. On each side, a machine set with a capacity of 27,000 kilowatts was set up. Both generators could produce an average of 251 million kilowatt hours per year. Due to their central location and the possibility of threshold operation, the power plants of Enns-Kraftwerke AG were a particularly important factor in the electricity industry, especially during the period of economic reconstruction of Austria.
