Born on January 14, 1875 in Kayserberg / Alsace, Albert Schweitzer had already written fundamental works on theology, philosophy of religion and music, when he decided to study medicine and in 1913 to go as a mission doctor in the then French Equatorial Africa. In 1954 he received the Nobel Prize for his work as a primeval forest doctor in Lambaréné. Central to Schweitzer's thinking and acting was the "reverence for life." By definition, this meant - far beyond interpersonal - a responsibility and consideration of the individual for any form of life. Albert Schweitzer died on September 4, 1965 in Lambaréné / Gabon.
