Hermann Hesse, born on July 2, 1877 in Calw, Württemberg, counts alongside Thomas Mann among the internationally most famous German authors of the 20th century. He began to write against the wishes of his parents and left the gymnasium at the age of 16. In 1906 his student tragedy "Unterm Rad" was published. In 1912, Hesse moved to Switzerland and published his married man "Rosshalde" (1914). After the beginning of the First World War, he was considered in Germany because of time-critical statements as a traitor. "Narcissus and Goldmund" (1939) was his most successful book during Hesse's lifetime. The poet, who won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1946, died on August 9, 1962 in Montagnola near Lugano in Switzerland.
