In a charter of Charlemagne Ingolstadt was first mentioned in 806. In 1472 the first Bavarian university was founded there. Until its transfer to Landshut and Munich, this 328 years was the spiritual and cultural center of Bavaria and was one of the most important places of humanism and of the Counter-Reformation in the German-speaking area next to Prague and Vienna. Among other things, Johannes Eck, the famous adversary of the reformer Martin Luther, taught there. From 1828 Ingolstadt was expanded under King Ludwig I of Bavaria to the provincial stronghold. The fortifications are among the city's landmarks. Today, Ingolstadt is a modern, up-and-coming economic center with 120,000 inhabitants.
