Oskar Schindler, born on April 28, 1908 in Zwittau (today's Czech Republic), saved nearly 1,100 Jews during the Second World War. At the beginning of the war, politically opportunistic entrepreneurs initially used Jewish forced laborers in their factory for profit. But the brutality of the National Socialists against the Jewish population made him rethink. He risked his fortune and his life in order to be able to accommodate Jews in their own labor camp and thus save them from being sent to extermination camps. The State of Israel therefore honored him with the title "Righteous Among the Nations." His rescue operation became known throughout the world in 1993 through the theatrical hit »Schindler's List«. Oskar Schindler died on October 9, 1974 in Hildesheim.
