The philosopher, sociologist, music theorist and composer Theodor W. Adorno was born in 1903 in Frankfurt am Main. From 1931 to 1934 he taught at the local university. In 1934 he emigrated to England. From there he moved to the United States in 1938. In 1949 he returned to Frankfurt, where he directed the Institute for Social Research from 1959. With Max Horkheimer Adorno developed the "Critical Theory". It combines social-economic doctrines of Marxism with insights of psychoanalysis. Capitalist societies should be examined for possible changes. The critical theory significantly influenced the protest movements of the 1960s. Theodor W. Adorno died in 1969 in Visp, Switzerland.
