The philosopher and religious scholar Hans Jonas was born on 10 May 1903 in Mönchengladbach. He studied philosophy, religion and art history in Freiburg, Berlin and Marburg. In 1928 he earned his doctorate with "The Concept of Gnosis" (gnosis = knowledge of God). In 1933 he emigrated to London, in 1934 to Jerusalem. Jonas taught in Jerusalem, Montreal, Ottawa and New York. He worked on religious studies, natural philosophy and ethical topics. He demanded that responsibility for human life be counteracted by any threat to nature, and he turned against cloning. His writings have been translated into 16 languages. In 1987 he was awarded the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade. Hans Jonas died on February 5, 1993 in New York.
