The 100th birthday of the Catholic theologian and religious philosopher Romano Guardini Romano Guardini is one of the most respected and influential Catholic theologians and religious philosophers of the century. Through his scientific and literary work, and not least because of his personality, he has decisively shaped the renewal-seeking Catholicism, the Catholic intelligentsia and especially the Catholic youth movement after the First World War. Born on February 17, 1885 in Verona, Romano Guardini grew up in Mainz in 1886. After his ordination (1910), pastoral activity, doctorate and habilitation in 1923 he is appointed to a chair for "Philosophy of Religion and Catholic Philosophy" at the University of Berlin. In addition to his teaching and research activities, he holds the already existing since 1920 connection to the youth movement belonging to the Catholic League "Quickborn" and its center, the castle Rothenfels, upright, first as co-editor of Quickborn magazine "Die Schildgenossen", since 1927 as a federal leader of the Quickborn and as head of the castle Rothenfels. This time is a particularly creative period for the versatile Romano Guardini. He is one of the leading figures of the liturgical movement, and his already extensive literary work includes not only philosophical and theological works, but also contributions and studies on literary-cultural, educational and political-social issues. After the seizure of power by the National Socialists in 1933 Guardini is exposed in his work considerable difficulties. The National Socialists lift his chair in 1939 and dismiss him; In 1941 the magazine "The Shield Companions" is banned. After the war, Romano Guardini is first appointed to the University of Tübingen, in 1948 to the University of Munich to the Chair of Philosophy of Religion and Christian World View of the Faculty of Philosophy. In Munich, he continues his extremely fruitful teaching as well as his literary work, which identifies him not only as a scientist of high rank, whose work can not be classified in a narrow disciplinary scheme, but also as a brilliant essayist and astute interpreter of the intellectual currents of his time , At the same time he assumes important tasks in the church and public sphere. Romano Guardini received numerous honors, among them the peace price the German book trade (1952) and the admission into the order Pour le mérite for sciences and arts (1958). On 1 October 1968 Guardini dies in Munich. The prize, awarded by the Catholic Academy in Bavaria since 1970, bears his name. (Text: Commissariat of German Bishops, Bonn)
